Things To Know For Paper 2
I know it's the day before the exam and I'm only just uploading something. But I'm a pro-procrastinator (sounds like a stutter-doesn't it?) so this is actually pretty early.
Each module has one question, you don't have a choice, you have to do all the questions. Each question will require you writing an essay worth 25 marks. You do have a word limit of 500 words, well for module 1 and 2 at least. They really let you go crazy for mod 3, so have fun with it.
Here is a quick list of things they like to keep bringing for Paper 2.
The stuff in green are the topics they absolutely love.
MODULE 1: GATHERING AND PROCESSING INFORMATION
For this section of the paper, they'll give you a an extract of some sort to analyse. It can be from a story or a newspaper article.

MODULE 1: GATHERING AND PROCESSING INFORMATION
For this section of the paper, they'll give you a an extract of some sort to analyse. It can be from a story or a newspaper article.
- State writer's main point. They usually give you a word limit (in no more than 30 words...)
- The writer's main purpose. (No it's NOT the same thing!)
- Strategies and language techniques used in the extract (and how effective they are)
- Appropriateness of tone
- Appropriateness of register (whoa it's freaking late)
- Evaluate the reliability of the information
MODULE 2: LANGUAGE AND COMMUNITY
They normally give an extract that includes some ah de Creole and ting from ah book or story, but sometimes when they're really evil, they might bring a poem (the horror of 2008-it wasn't that bad. Cool yuh herbs). So don't be surprised if you find a play or poem, or something other than a prose extract. In this module they ask things specific to the extract, but here are they general topics they usually ask:
- Attitudes toward language (Standard English/Creole)
- Communication/meaning and technology (how can the communication process/meaning be enhanced by the use of _______*<-----insert technological device there*)
- Uses of language
- Social factors influencing language.
- Registers
- Dialectical variation
- Communicative behaviours
- relationship between language and context
- Appropriateness of language
MODULE 3: SPEAKING AND WRITING:
This is the module people generally have the hardest time with, most likely because it involves a little more thinking. Thinking is hard. I gave you a link to some tips, well to the format at least. But you lazy bastards probably didn't look twice at it so here it is again http://erratic-explosions.tumblr.com/CS_Mod3
This module doesn't have an extract to comment on, instead they put you in some kind of bizarre situation and tell you to do things. For example: You are a marketing exec at Apple, we have decided to go into the ceramic Buddha industry. Sell our shit.
No word limit. Go fucking crazy with it.
Here's what they look for in that essay:
- Strategies to persuade
- Register and Tone
- Media/Channel to be used
- Targeting different audiences
- Use of language
- Influence of verbal and non-verbal elements on audience
- Visual aids to be used in campaign/presentation
- Strategies to enhance
- Communication challenges
Sometimes they like asking you to actually write the shit as in the speech to be given/the address to be made. So pay attention to your audience and your register and tone.
If you're asked to write a speech it will probably be a part of a question; the question will most likely be a two part question. The first part may ask you about anything listed above and the second part will obviously be the speech.
You obviously cant say - "I'm using formal register"- so rather...use formal register. Adopt the correct diction that you should use under the circumstance, remember register and tone aren't only how you say but what you say.
Example? You are very beautiful vs. Yuh rel bess gyal. It doesn't matter what tone you adopt for the second one, it's not formal.

Also remember for a speech you have to address the audience. So obviously that kinda incorporates the whole audience thing in it.
Well good luck in exams AGAIN people!
Lets say they ask you to write a speech, how do you include audience, tone and registers in that speech? :s
ReplyDeletegood question. I'll edit and answer :)
ReplyDeleteU see right..Im kinda in a zone here..like what is tone?
ReplyDeleteTone is basically the quality of voice, like how someone says something. Tone can be conversational, formal, friendly. You won't really need to discuss tone in mod 3, don't worry :P
